Steven Huszczynski, PhD 

​Steven’s project is aimed at elucidating the antimicrobial mechanisms of silver oxynitrate. Silver has been used as an antimicrobial for centuries and is thought to target numerous cellular components, resulting in cessation of cellular respiration and cell death. The majority of mechanistic studies to date have utilized singly ionic silver; however, higher oxidation state silver (Ag2+ and Ag3+), as found in silver oxynitrate, possesses more potent and efficient antimicrobial properties.  Steven will use a multi-faceted approach to determine what toxic effect(s) higher oxidation states of silver unleash unto bacterial cells.
